2024 Design Trends and Predictions 💡 👀
As we pass the mid-point of January, we’re now well and truly into 2024. So, what’s 2024 looking like in the world of design so far? And what do we think it’s going to look like as the year unfolds…?
Whilst we’ve not got any sort of special future-telling powers (which would be both cool and quite possibly terrifying), we’ve gathered what we know from recent design trends and what we can see emerging, and put them together to make our 2024 Design Predictions list.
Over the last few years, we’ve seen logo trends take a dive into extremely minimal (sans serif fonts, bold block colours, very simplified icons) and in 2023 we saw a rise in somewhat retro gradients and icons to add extra personality into designs. Gradients were so far out of fashion just a few years ago that they came back around. So, what’s next? Where do we go from here?
Without further ado, our predictions are…
1) More gradients
The start of 2024 doesn’t mean it’s all change. What we’ve seen growing over the last few years is an upwards trend in gradients that aren’t going anywhere just yet. Whether it’s on your website or in your social media, gradients can be a great bold choice. When it comes to logo design, our top tip is to check that your logo can be used (and looks effective) when it’s swapped into a single colour - there may be times when you need this and you don’t want your gradient to limit you (ensure you have the best of both worlds).
2) Three dimensional designs (aka 3D)
In some ways, 3D design is just a hop, skip, and a jump away from clever gradient design. We’re predicting brands will lean into clever gradients and straight lines to create clean and minimal 3D designs that are bold and grab attention 💥
Plus, we’re seeing more and more 3D avatars, in all kinds of styles, with the rise of Web3.
3) Bold and brighter colours
Whilst colour trends can be somewhat seasonal - autumn, winter, spring and summer all have very different colour connotations - our overall prediction is a trend in bold and brighter colours. In 2023, we saw a lot of natural muted tones (creams, beiges, browns) especially on Instagram. But we’re noticing some stark contrasting colours emerging…
and muted palettes with a splash of colour could be on the rise.
4) AI-powered design
It’s no surprise that AI-powered design features in our predictions list. From Adobe’s new Generative AI tools to Canva’s new magic suite, the integration of AI into the apps we know and love, and brand new AI apps popping up daily, there’s a lot of AI around. Whether it’s using AI in design to test ideas out for moodboarding, to achieve something you couldn’t achieve on your own, or to speed up processes, we’re certainly predicting a big use of AI this year in all things design.
5) A little bit of everything!
Mirroring the fashion world, the design world is becoming a mix of all that’s been before - be that vintage, retro, minimal, bold, colourful, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and even the 1920s. As apps like Canva open up the world of design to non-designers, so comes a lot more personality and a variety of design styles - probably more than we’ve ever seen before.
